Project Editor (Part-Time) BookMason Indie

Location: Remote (U.S.-based preferred)
Compensation: $40/hour
Hours: Up to 30 hours per week
Potential for Full-Time Employment: After successful completion of a six-month probationary period

BookMason Indie is redefining the self-publishing experience by giving independent authors access to professional publishing management traditionally available only through established publishing houses.

Built on the principles of the BookMason platform used by publishing professionals, BookMason Indie provides authors with dedicated project leadership, transparent workflows, real-time progress tracking, and access to experienced publishing specialists. Our goal is simple: help authors publish high-quality books while providing the guidance and structure they need to succeed.

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Project Editor to join our growing team.

This position is ideal for publishing professionals who enjoy managing book projects from manuscript through publication and who thrive in a highly organized, author-focused environment.

Project Editors serve as the primary point of contact for authors throughout the publishing process. They oversee schedules, coordinate services, monitor production activities, communicate project milestones, and ensure a professional and positive publishing experience.

Each Project Editor manages up to ten independent author clients simultaneously while working within the BookMason Indie platform.

Responsibilities

  • Manage multiple book projects from initiation through publication

  • Serve as the primary liaison between authors and publishing service providers

  • Assign and monitor project tasks within the BookMason Indie platform

  • Track project progress, milestones, deliverables, and deadlines

  • Communicate regularly with authors regarding project status and next steps

  • Review project schedules and identify potential bottlenecks or delays

  • Coordinate revisions and production-related activities

  • Maintain accurate project records and documentation

  • Ensure a professional, responsive, and supportive author experience

Qualifications

Required:

  • Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience managing book projects within a publishing house, university press, or established publishing organization

  • Demonstrated experience overseeing multiple publishing projects simultaneously

  • Strong understanding of editorial, design, production, and publishing workflows

  • Exceptional organizational and time-management skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities

  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality

Preferred:

  • Experience working with independent authors

  • Familiarity with project management software and publishing workflow systems

  • Background in editorial, production editorial, managing editorial, or project management roles
